Source Ratings

The Shitshow carries political news only from sources rated 80 or more out of 100 for reliability, and leaves out opinion pieces such as editorials, op-eds and columns. Every story shows its source's rating: its reliability, then its political bias.

How sources are rated

Each source is rated by an AI language model from OpenAI, from what is known of its record. The model weighs:

  • Fact-checkers: Assessments by fact-checking organizations such as FactCheck.org, PolitiFact and the Poynter Institute.
  • Media bias research: Media bias research such as AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media.
  • Journalistic standards: Whether it follows journalistic standards for transparency, accountability and corrections.
  • Track record: Its track record for accuracy over time.
  • Content: The language, tone and framing of its reporting and opinion content.

No criterion has a fixed weight: a rating is the model's overall judgment. The model answers from what it learned about each source and about what these organizations have said of it. It does not read the source's current coverage, and its ratings cite no particular fact-check or study. Each source below shows which model rated it and when. Treat the ratings as a guide, not a verdict.
